OCLCがWorldCat Discovery Servicesを発表―FirstSearchとWorldCat Localの後継サービス

2014年1月23日にOCLCから「Introducing WorldCat Discovery」というメールがきておおおっとテンションが上がりました．1月24日〜28日にフィラデルフィアで開催されるALA Midwinterに合わせての発表だろうと思います（この時期はシステムベンダから大量のプレスリリースが出ます）．



以下，カレント-Rが結構あっさりだったのでいろいろ調べてメモ．＞自分の原稿のため

概要

  • WorldCat Discovery ServicesはFirstSearchとWorldCat Localの後継となるクラウドサービス
  • 13億4,600万件の電子・デジタル化・物理的資料が検索可能
  • 2014年3月リリース（まずはFirstSearchユーザ向け）

要はFirstSearchが終了して，WorldCat Localみたいなんが後継サービスとして提供される，という感じ．

名前はWorldShare Management Servicesと揃えてあるのでしょう（EBSCO Discovery ServiceはServiceが単数形で，OCLCは複数形なんだよなぁ．ややこし）．




移行期間

  • FirstSearchユーザには一年間以上の移行期間（a transition period of at least 12 months）
  • WorldShare Management Services / WorldCat Localユーザには2014年4月リリースで，18か月間の移行期間（WorldCat Local libraries will also move to WorldCat Discovery Services over the next 18 months. / WorldShare Management Services users, along with users of WorldCat Local, may try the new service during a beta period that begins in April 2014.）

FirstSearch / WorldCat Localでちょっとタイミングをずらしていますね．FirstSearchにはなるべく早く終わってほしいという感じなのかしら．




インタフェース

  • モバイル対応（An interface that automatically adjusts for desktops, tablets and mobile.）

は当然するようです．レスポンシブウェブデザインかどうかは分からないですね．

画面はおそらくWorldCat Localの延長線上にあり，古めかしいFirstSearchとはまったく別物でしょう．Macalester Collegeでベータテスト中というので同大学のWorldCat Localを見てみましたが，従来通りに見えるので，テスト画面は公開されていないのかな．

紹介動画ではこんな画面がありましたが……．うーん．

有料オプション（for-fee options）

有料オプションとして以下の5つが挙げられています．

  • Real-time availability status. Show users what’s available in their local library collection.
  • A group- or consortium-view of available resources. Maximize and reinforce the value of your library’s group affiliations.
  • Management of course reserves or reading lists. Build temporary collections of resources organized by course or subject for easy identification.
  • Remote database search. Integrated search of all library subscriptions, including those not in the central index.
  • Customized traffic and usage reports. Measure usage and support with the use of Adobe® SiteCatalyst®.

ざっと訳しつつ解説すると，

  • 利用状況のリアルタイム表示（資料の利用状況（貸出中かどうかなど）をリアルタイムに取得して表示する）
  • グループ／コンソーシアム機能
  • コースリザーブ，リーディングリスト機能
  • セントラルインデクスに含まれないデータベースの統合検索
  • Adobe SiteCatalystによるログレポート機能

という感じ．

特に，4番目が気になりますね．ウェブスケールディスカバリサービスのセントラルインデクス（統合インデクス）には十数億のリソースが収録されていますが，まだまだ検索できないものも多く，そういったリソースを検索するために別途統合検索（横断検索）サービスを組み合わせるという手法があります．例えばEBSCO Discovery Serviceで採用されていますが，現在のWorldCat Localにはこの機能はなかったんじゃないかな……（要確認）．この機能についてはFAQに“When a library implements remote database searching, results from remote content are integrated into a single set of search results, along with results from the central index.”とありますので，セントラルインデクスの検索結果と外部データベースの検索結果はまとめて（後者はサイドバーに別に，というのではなく）表示されるようですね．




日本的に気になるところ

日本の図書館とOCLCの関係は，99%以上が「FirstSearchの導入のみ」でしょう（NDL，早稲田大学，神奈川工科大学除く？）．FAQの以下の項目はぴったり参考になります．

How will current FirstSearch subscribers that do not maintain holdings in WorldCat benefit from WorldCat Discovery Services?


Current FirstSearch subscribers will receive the following benefits from WorldCat Discovery, regardless of the presence of their collections in WorldCat:

  • A new user interface that adapts automatically to mobile devices
  • Access to a central index that represents more than a billion articles, e-books and other e-content
  • The ability to manage access to digital collections with CONTENTdm® “quick start”
  • Links to full text via an existing OpenURL resolver and from URLs included in the 856 field of WorldCat records.

その他に「OCLCに所蔵登録しているFirstSearch導入館」と「WorldCat LocalおよびWorldShare Management Services導入館」にとってどんな変化があるのかが表にまとめられています．他の項目も読んでいるとこのcatalogingには電子リソースのナレッジベースの管理も含まれているもよう．

FAQに

  • Z39.50対応終了（Z39.50 searching of WorldCat will not be supported in WorldCat Discovery.）
  • WorldCat Local "quick start"終了（The separate WorldCat Local “quick start” will be discontinued following the WorldCat Discovery release. ）

なども書いてありました．後者はもうみんな忘れてると思いますが……．





さて，FirstSearchってどれくらい使われてるんでしょうか．WorldCat.orgで十分だと感じているひとが多いんじゃないかという気もします．個人的には，海外ILLを担当していたころに時々使ってみるという感じでした（WorldCat.orgでは「usa」などとロケーションを入力しないと所蔵一覧が表示されないのに対して，FirstSearchでは所蔵館数と所蔵一覧が表示されるというただ一点のみにおいて便利でした．所蔵がsparseで世界中に分散している場合には役に立つ．どこか特定の国で十分所蔵されているのならWorldCat.orgでOK）．

WorldCat Discovery Servicesでは，FirstSearchの同時アクセス数制限がなくなるかどうかがいちばん気になったりする．
